Electric cooktops or ranges can be quite fun to cook with, but there are a few things you need to know before you whip up that first batch of your world-famous chili. If you haven't used a ceramic cooktop before, pay special attention to the Hot Surface indicator: the cooktop surface may be hotter than it appears. We'll also go over how the cooktop surface works and how to use the knobs. Ready to cook like a pro? Let’s dive in!

Note: While the advice in this guide is universally applicable, it has been tailored specifically for our Canadian customers.

For the basics of using your electric cooktop or range, the upcoming sections have you covered. If you're curious about other features, or if your cooktop is part of a range and you need instructions for tasks like set the clock, the full user manual is readily available in our Download Center.

To set the stove to your preferred setting, push in the control knob and turn it in either direction.

Some knobs manage dual or triple surface elements, accommodating different pot sizes. For these, the settings around the knob are divided into two or three sections, each corresponding to a configuration: single, dual, or triple. Simply turn the knob to the desired temperature within the section that matches your pot's size.

Your electric range or cooktop features a unique cooking area distinguished by permanent circles on the glass surface known as elements. For the most efficient cooking experience, it's best to match the pan size closely with the element size; ideally, pans should not extend more than 1 to 2.5 cm beyond the element.

When a control is activated, a glow will be visible through the glass surface indicating the element is on. To maintain the desired heat setting, the element will automatically cycle on and off, even at high settings.

The Hot Surface indicator is an essential safety feature of your cooktop or range. It lights up when the unit is turned on or if the surface is still hot to the touch, and it remains illuminated even after the unit has been turned off. This indicator continues to glow until the temperature of the cooktop drops to approximately 65°C (150°F), signaling that the surface is no longer a burn hazard.

Caution:

  • Even when turned off, these elements may remain hot enough to cause burns, so avoid touching them until they have sufficiently cooled down.
  • At high or medium settings, never leave food unattended on the cooktop. Boil-overs can lead to smoke, and greasy spillovers might ignite, posing a fire hazard.
  • Always ensure to turn the control knob to OFF once you finish cooking to maintain safety.

If you finish cooking one dish before the others are ready, the Warming Center is here to help. It keeps hot, cooked food at the perfect serving temperature while you complete the rest of your meal preparations.

Note: Not all electric ranges are equipped with a Warming Center.

1 To activate the Warming Center, press the On/Off button located under the 'Warming Center' label on the control panel.

Note: The surface of the Warming Center does not glow red like the cooking elements.

2 Select the desired power setting for the Warming Center by pressing the Level pad on the control panel. Press once for Low, twice for Medium, or three times for High. Each setting is optimized for different warming needs:
  • Low: Ideal for warming breads, pastries, casseroles, gravies and eggs.
  • Medium: Suitable for a dinner plate with assorted foods, creamy soups, vegetables, sauces, stews and meats.
  • High: Best for keeping fried foods crispy, heating liquid soups and warming hot beverages.

3 For optimal results, cover all foods placed on the Warming Center with a lid or aluminum foil. When warming pastries or breads, ensure the cover is vented to allow moisture to escape.
4 To deactivate the Warming Center, press the On/Off button located under the 'Warming Center' label on the control panel.

Note: Pressing the oven's OFF/CLEAR button will not deactivate the Warming Center.
