Use the navigation bar on your Galaxy tablet
The Navigation bar helps you, well, navigate your Galaxy tablet. It works as kind of a manual override switch, giving you control over your tablet. Whether you prefer the classic style, want to rearrange the button order, or don't want it to appear at all, you can customize the Navigation bar.
Information provided applies to devices sold in Canada. Available screens and settings may vary for tablets sold in other countries.
This is the classic Navigation bar, with Recents, Home, and Back buttons at the bottom of your screen. It is the default navigation method on all Galaxy tablets.
Here are what the three buttons do:
- Recents: The button to the far left. When you tap this, your recently opened apps will appear.
- Home: The button in the very center. Tap this to be taken to the Home screen.
- Back: The button to the far right. Tap this to go back to the previous screen.
Please be aware that the Navigation bar may disappear when using certain apps, such as gaming apps or video services. You can swipe up to temporarily see the bar when using these apps. If you ever wish to switch or change back to the default Navigation bar, you can do so by navigating to Settings, searching for and selecting Navigation type, and then choosing Navigation buttons.
If you'd like to rearrange the order of the navigation buttons, please see the next section.
If you don't want the Navigation bar taking up part of your screen, you can use Full screen gestures instead. It makes the Navigation bar disappear. Instead, you can use swiping gestures to navigate through your tablet. To switch to Full-screen gestures, navigate to Settings, search for and select Navigation type, and then choose Full screen gestures.
Even though the icons will be gone, the gestures still have the same functions:
- Far left: When you swipe here, your recently opened apps will appear.
- Middle: Swipe up in the center to be taken to the Home screen.
- Far right: Swipe here to go back to the previous screen.
You can turn on Gesture hints to show where to swipe up for Home, Back, and Recents. Additionally, you can block gestures with the S Pen so you don't accidentally activate a command when drawing or writing.
The order of the commands can also be changed, just like with the regular Navigation bar. Please see the next section to learn how to change the command order.
You can also adjust the order of the buttons on the Navigation bar to mix it up. From Settings, search for and select Button order.
Choose your desired setup under Button order. The changes will be instantly applied.
