Factory reset or reboot your SmartThings Wi-Fi hub
If you are having issues with your SmartThings hub, SmartThings Wifi, Connect Home, Connect Home Pro or modem, you can reset or reboot the device. But what is the difference between a reset and reboot? A factory reset will restore your hub to its default settings and remove all data (like device connections) if you would like to start from scratch. A reboot will simply power the hub on and off and then refresh your settings; no devices or settings will be removed. No matter which type of hub you have, performing a factory reset or reboot will be quick and easy.
Note: The provided information refers to devices sold in Canada. The available screens and settings may differ for devices sold in other countries. You can visit the SmartThings website to check device compatibility and gather more information. Performing a factory reset will remove all settings and configurations, including connections between the hub and other devices.
You can also manually reset the hub if needed. However, the process will be a little different depending on what kind of hub you have.
- SmartThings Wifi, Connect Home, or Connect Home Pro
Disconnect the power cable from the hub, and then reconnect it. Next, insert a small tool into the hub's RESET button, located on the back of the hub. Remove the tool when the LED on the front goes dark. The LED will reboot and blink red and green when the hub is ready for setup.
- SmartThings Hub (2018)
First, unplug the power cable from the back. Then, using a pin or similar tool, hold down the RESET button. Continue to hold the button while reinserting the power cable, and until the LED on the front switches from flashing yellow to solid yellow.
Note: If you do not release the button within a few seconds after the LED switches to solid yellow, the hub may not begin the reset.
- SmartThings Hub v2
Press and hold the red recessed button at the back of the hub for 30 seconds. When the LED on the front switches from flashing yellow to solid yellow, release the button. Make sure the hub is plugged in with the included power and Ethernet cables. Do not disconnect the cables.
You can reset your SmartThings Wifi hub right from the SmartThings app!
Open the SmartThings app, then tap the Devices tab (at the bottom of the screen), and then tap the Home icon. Select your desired location, swipe through the rooms to find your hub, and then select it.
Tap Network status, and then tap your Wi-Fi hub. Tap the More options icon (the three vertical dots), and then tap Factory reset.
Finally, tap Reset to confirm.
The Connect Home is another hub that can be reset from the app and does not always require a physical reset.
Open the SmartThings app, then tap the Devices tab (at the bottom of the screen), and then tap the Home icon. Select your desired location, swipe through the rooms to find your Connect Home, and then select it.
Tap the Wi-Fi hub image. Swipe to and tap Factory reset, and then tap RESET. The hub will reboot and when the LED blinks red and green, the hub will be ready for setup.
Note: All connected devices must be reset (or excluded) before they can be reconnected.
Hubs with a firmware version below 17.11 require a bit more attention. You will have to remove all your connected devices and app configurations, such as Automations, Scenes, and SmartApps, before you can reset the hub.
- Delete all automations: Navigate to and open the SmartThings app. Tap the Automations tab, and then tap the More options icon (the three vertical dots). Tap Delete, and then deselect an automation. Tap Delete again to confirm, and then tap Done. Repeat this for all of your automations.
- Delete all scenes: Open the SmartThings app, and then tap the Automations tab. Tap the More options icon (the three vertical dots), then tap Delete, and then deselect a scene. Tap Delete, and then tap Delete again to confirm. Tap Done. Repeat this for all of your scenes.
- Delete all devices: Open the SmartThings app, then tap the Devices tab, and then tap the Home icon. Select your desired location. Then, tap the drop-down menu and tap All devices. Tap the More options icon (the three vertical dots), and then tap Delete. Tap the minus icons next to each device, and then tap Delete to confirm. Tap Done. Repeat this for all of your devices in each location.
- Remove locations: Open the SmartThings app, and then tap the Devices tab. Tap the Home icon, and then tap Manage locations. Tap your desired location, then tap Remove location, and then tap Remove. Repeat this for all locations.
Once you have removed everything and the hub has been reset, you can attempt to add the hub to SmartThings again.
- Reboot the SmartThings Wifi hub
Maybe the power went out recently and you are having trouble connecting your SmartThings Wifi. You can perform a reboot through the SmartThings app to fix minor issues without losing your data.
Open the SmartThings app, then tap the Devices tab (at the bottom of the screen), and then tap the Home icon. Select your desired location, swipe through the rooms to find your hub, and then select it. Tap Network status, and then tap your desired hub (Basement, Office, etc.). Next, tap the More options icon (the three vertical dots), and then tap Reboot device.
Tap REBOOT. Your SmartThings Wifi hub will disconnect and reboot.
- Reboot the modem connected to SmartThings Wifi
If you are still unable to connect to SmartThings Wifi, rebooting the modem should help. Unplug the modem and SmartThings Wifi hub, and wait two minutes for both devices to fully power off. Then, plug them back in.
If it still will not connect, verify one end of the Ethernet cable is connected to the IN port on the SmartThings Wifi hub, and the other end is connected to the modem. Make sure you are using the included Ethernet cable and both ends are tightly connected. If you still cannot connect, try using another Ethernet cable that supports up to 1 Gbps.
If you are still experiencing issues with your SmartThings hub, such as an inactive or offline hub, you can try rebooting it. This may also help if some of your smart devices are not responding.
- Reboot SmartThings Hub v2 (2015) or v3 (2018)
Disconnect the power and Ethernet cables from the Hub. If your Hub has batteries installed, also remove the batteries. Wait 2-3 minutes, and then reconnect the power and Ethernet cables, as well as the batteries if applicable. When the Hub is back online, the LED will turn solid green.
- Reboot SmartThings Hub v1 (2013)
Disconnect the power and Ethernet cables from the Hub, and wait at least 30 seconds. Reconnect the power and Ethernet cables. When the Hub is back online, the LED will turn solid green.
Note: There are a few different kinds of SmartThings hubs (V1, V2, and V3), so make sure you are performing the correct steps for your model.
