The ease and accessibility of photography especially in the modern world; where every smartphone comes with a camera as standard, can make it seem a lesser visual form of expression than say, drawing or sculpture.

1

Anna-Lou Leibovitz

“I wish that all of nature’s magnificence, the emotion of the land, the living energy of place could be photographed.” Anna-Lou Leibovitz

Anna-Lou “Annie” Leibovitz is a world-renowned portrait photographer who has shot some of the most strikingly intimate photos of famous people ever recorded, including the timeless 1980’s Rolling Stone cover of John Lennon lying naked with his girlfriend Yoko Ono.

She was awarded The Royal Photographic Society's Centenary Medal and Honorary Fellowship (HonFRPS) in recognition of her contribution to the art of photography in 2009.

2

Karl Lagerfeld

“What I like about photographs is that they capture a moment that’s gone forever, impossible to reproduce.” Karl Lagerfeld

As a creative director, a fashion designer, an artist and a photographer, Karl Lagerfeld was a huge servant to the visual arts before his death earlier this year. As a creative director he was head of both Chanel and Fendi, as well as his own self named label, but as a photographer he was prolific too.

After Lagerfeld took up photography in the 1980s, moving behind the lens to shoot his own fashion campaigns, he moved between fine art and fashion photography with ease, often merging them together in his own style.

Andy Warhol

“The best thing about a picture is that it never changes, even when the people in it do.” - Andy Warhol

Pop art is a movement born in the UK and US that takes inspiration from current commercial and pop culture, and often seen as a reaction against the more elitist ‘fine art’ tradition. And Andy Warhol, an American artist whose popularity exploded in the 70’s and 80’s, is the name that is probably most closely associated with it, more than any other.

His rough and ready photography mostly dealt in Polaroids and black and white prints, with topics ranging from his close friend and fellow artist Jean-Michel Basquait to New York Gay Pride, often with a view to repurposing his photos for his own art.

4

Eliott Erwitt

“The whole point of taking pictures is so that you don’t have to explain things with words.” - Eliott Erwitt

Elliott Erwitt is an American advertising and documentary photographer renowned for his black and white candid photos of everyday life, often with an ironic and absurd twist.

Erwitt started his career in the American army as a photography assistant. Yet despite his military roots, his favourite topic for his work is dogs, and he has published five books solely dedicated to his favourite pics of pooches.
