In order to safely use containers in a microwave oven, they must be made of a material that permits microwaves to pass through them and reach the food effectively. The following materials are suitable for this purpose:
- China and pottery: These items are generally suitable for microwave cooking, provided they are labeled as "oven-safe." Always check for such labels before using them.
- Ovenproof glass and glass ceramic dishes: These types of dishes are perfect for microwave cooking since they can withstand high temperatures without cracking.
- Fine bone china and ordinary glass: Although these materials may be used in a microwave, it's essential to limit their exposure to heat. Overheating may cause them to crack or break.
- Paper cups, cartons, cling film, and thermoplastics: These materials are typically safe for microwave use but should be kept away from direct contact with food to avoid potential contamination.
- Metal or foil containers: Microwave ovens work by emitting electromagnetic waves, which metal reflects back towards the magnetron (the device generating microwaves). This reflection may damage the oven or even start a fire, so always avoid using metal containers in a microwave.
- Melamine ware: Due to its tendency to crack under heat, melamine ware is best avoided in a microwave setting.
