Manage locations and rooms in the SmartThings app

Last Update date : Mar 03. 2022

When you have a lot of devices to manage, adding them to locations and rooms in the SmartThings app can make your life easier. You’ll be able to organise your devices and smart hubs based on where they are in your home. You can create multiple locations for your different hubs, and rooms are the best way to group devices in one area of your home or another, such as a Smart Bulb that will turn on the lights in your kitchen.

Think of locations as the main launch pads for your connected hubs and devices. You can create a location without adding any devices. However, adding your very first device to SmartThings will automatically create a location with the default name "Home."

1 To add a new location, navigate to and open the SmartThings app.
2 Tap the Home icon, and then tap the Location drop-down menu.
3 Tap + Add location and enter a name for the location. If desired, add a Geolocation, wallpaper, or rooms, and then tap ¨Done¨.
4 Whenever you want to go to the location, tap ¨Menu¨, tap the Location drop-down menu, and then tap your new location.
Add a new location screen in the SmartThings app.

There are several options when editing your location, such as changing the Geolocation, changing the wallpaper, or renaming the location.

1 To begin editing a location, open the SmartThings app, tap the Home icon and Tap the Location drop-down menu. Then select the location you want to edit.
2 Tap ¨Manage locations¨. There you will find your available locations.

Create rooms to intuitively group your connected devices according to where they are located in your home. You can directly interact with your devices and manage multiple devices assigned to a room at any time.

1 To add a room, open the SmartThings app, and tap ¨Devices¨.
2 Tap drop-down menu select ¨Manage rooms¨.
3 Tap Add (+ icon), and then select a new location.
4 Choose a name for the room, and then tap ¨Next¨. Select a wallpaper for the room, and then tap ¨Save¨. You can tap ¨Change wallpaper¨ to make a different choice.
5 Once it’s saved, the room will appear under its assigned location. You can find it by navigating to the location, and then tapping the room. From here, you can add devices to the room and make other changes by tapping + Add device.

There are several options available when editing a room, such as changing the wallpaper or giving the room a new name. You can also delete the room if you no longer need it.

1 First, open the SmartThings app, and tap the Home icon.
2 Tap ¨Manage locations¨, and then select the location with the room you want to edit.
3 Select your desired room. You can adjust these settings:
  • Room name: Rename the room.
  • Wallpaper: Change the room's wallpaper.
  • Remove room: Delete the room. The devices in the room will not be deleted and will remain in the location.

If you accidentally set up your Samsung smart device in the wrong SmartThings location, you can move the device to a new location without completely removing it from the app.

1 Navigate to the location that has the device you want to move.
2 Tap ¨Devices¨, and then select the room you want to edit in the drop-down menu.
3 Hold press, tap ¨Edit¨ and select the Samsung device you want to move.
4 Tap ¨Location¨ and then select the new location where you would like to move the device.
5 Select a new room for the device, and tap ¨Done¨.
6 The device will now automatically move to the new location.

Please note: This will not work for cloud or hub connected devices. Additionally, it needs to be a Samsung device.
