Kiara Taylor scooped first prize with her innovative tech-for-good idea to create a low cost irrigation system for farmers in Ghana.

The 24 year old from Sandhurst, Berkshire knew that when it comes to farming, lusher fields means that we can enjoy better produce. She developed a product that transforms farming by recycling e-waste into wind turbines and car batteries, ultimately powering drip irrigation systems that farmers in Ghana could use to grow and increase their crop yields.

Kiara praised the help she had along the way throughout the Solve for Tomorrow competition, to help develop her winning idea.

“The best part about the process was having mentoring from experienced people from both Samsung and the Start-up Discovery School. Advice from knowledgeable business people was invaluable!,” she said.” 

In addition to scooping £10,000, she also benefited from three months of focused mentoring from the Startup Discovery School – a programme that aims to help young inventers become entrepreneurs. Throughout the competition, it designed and delivered workshops to the contestants to help expand their innovative capabilities.

“This competition will allow me to develop my idea further, which will involve second round prototyping and testing, and looking at how to actually implement it in Ghana, which is my target country, which is obviously different to the UK, so that will be really interesting,’ she said.
