Driving into affordable power with Treeva

Solve for Tomorrow 2024 Winners: 18-25 category

When it comes to solving societal challenges, sometimes it’s personal experience that drives us to discover the change we want to see in the world.

That’s how Solve for Tomorrow’s 2024 winners, Anjali and Yu, came up with the innovative solution that scooped them first prize in this year’s competition.

Whizzing into action

The Treeva roadside turbine

After Anjali’s family were affected by flash floods in Kerala, the pair became passionate about finding a solution to climate change, and set out on an endeavour to reduce emissions in the transport sector.

Together, Anjali Benny Devadasan (22) and Yu Gu (22) created Treeva, a turbine device that can be placed on the side of roads to generate energy from passing vehicles, in order to provide affordable and reliable power and, in turn, create safe net zero transport systems.

Shaking up tech!

Treeva building their prototype

A combination of Samsung and industry experts helped select Treeva as this year’s winner in the 18-25 age category. One of the judges Ilisha Masuan, Founder & CEO, Econominds commented, “The level of innovation in this idea is astounding. They got from a cardboard model to a test model out on the roads in less than 6 months! Treeva will really shake up the wind turbine space.”

On finding out they were the winners of this year’s competition Anjali said: “This has been an incredible surprise and we're super excited to win this; we're so grateful for the support from the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow team and all the mentors who supported us along the way.”

As part of the Solve for Tomorrow programme, Treeva took part in 8 weeks of expert-led workshops to help them develop their design thinking, prototyping and pitching skills. They were also supported throughout the journey by their Samsung Mentor, Wincent Lau – Director of Corporate Strategy for One Samsung.

Making a difference to society

We asked Treeva what they would say to anyone considering entering the Solve for Tomorrow competition, they told us,“[We would] definitely, definitely recommend more young people enter the competition. It's not just winning the competition, but the process of participating in the programme. Young people can actually learn how and why they should solve for tomorrow and actually make a difference to the society we’re all living in.”

The duo scooped up a collective £10,000 prize and will take part in the Solve for Tomorrow accelerator phase as they plan the next step for Treeva. People are already lining up to use their product and we can’t wait to see it in action…
