Why is my refrigerator making noise?
Under the new European environmental regulations, manufacturers of all kinds of cooling products have had to replace old environmentally harmful refrigerants, commonly known as "Freon".
The refrigerant used nowadays, isobutane, is environmentally friendly, but requires higher pressure within the refrigeration system, which affects the natural sound level of the products. We will help you recognise and distinguish the ordinary noises from the unusual noises.
Read the sounds that are considered “normal” below:
This sound may be emitted several times a day during the system operation. It is caused by the flow of refrigerant through the system as it converts from a gaseous state to the liquid state. These types of sounds are common in new products.
Products with an automatic defrost function are equipped with fans that cause the cold air to circulate inside the unit. The sound emitted by these fans may be audible. In some models, the compressor is also equipped with a cooling fan.
Products with an automatic defrost function are equipped with a heating element to enable defrosting. Cracking noises may be heard, due to the expansion of the material or the fall of ice debris during thawing. This is a normal feature of this type of product.
A clicking sound may be heard when the compressor starts and stops. This noise, emitted by the initiation device, is normal for AC compressor models. Models with inverter compressors do not have start relays.
The refrigerator contains pipes that vibrate slightly when refrigerant is pumped into the system. These pipes must not be blocked or in contact with other pipes or cables. It is also possible for shelves, cupboards and other items in the refrigerator's interior to vibrate when the refrigerator is running.
Try to prevent the noise from originating:
1. Change the refrigerator's location or check that the pipes are not in contact with each other or the wall.
2. Position the refrigerator upright, without leaning it against anything.
3. Adjust the feet.
4. Remove any food from the shelves and then replace it.
5. Check that the containers inside the refrigerator do not hit each other.
The noise emitted by the compressor is caused by the electric motor powering the mechanical pump. Every time the compressor outsets, the noise is produced.
The number of times the compressor outsets depends on:
1. The internal temperature set.
2. The frequency with which the door is opened and closed.
3. The room temperature.
4. The amount of ventilation around the product.
5. The presence of hot food and/or the amount of food stored.
If one of our technicians has already checked the refrigerator for concerning noises and could not identify any breakdown, you can be certain that your product is in good condition.
