Sustainability with style

Designers reimagine the Samsung product experience by giving eco-conscious packaging materials an upscale look and feel.

As sustainability becomes a driving force in design innovation and inspiration, the quest to protect the environment will reshape our personal style. To address the growing impact of climate change and the need for sustainable solutions, Samsung designers are re-examining every aspect of our product catalog, from replacing single-use plastics with corrugated paper and recycled materials in smartphone packaging to using recycled and bio-based materials in products. The result is a mobile product experience that becomes significantly more environmentally conscious every year while preserving premium style.

Galaxy S21 packaging uses 58% of the paper used for Galaxy S7, saving up to 44,802 trees per year.¹

Paper or plastic?

Reducing single-use plastic is no longer a choice, it’s a global imperative. As part of our Galaxy for the Planet sustainability platform, we’re not only replacing single-use plastics with recycled plastics, we’re also replacing much of our plastic packaging with paper and other recyclable, renewable materials. We’re also reducing the amount of packaging overall to minimize waste.

Thinking inside the box

In reimagining sustainable packaging, we looked deep inside the smartphone package to see where we could reduce or replace wasteful materials. Over the last few years for example, Galaxy S series packaging has evolved from using plastic trays and films to paper pulp-mold trays and matte finishes that don’t require plastic sleeves. As a result, Samsung has reduced the amount of plastic used in Galaxy S Series phone packaging from 54% in 2016 to just 4% in 2021. Our goal is to reach zero-plastic packaging by 2025.

Keeping the premium look of the Galaxy series with recycled materials presented a unique challenge. Our designers tested and perfected the use of petroleum-free inks, dyes and paper finishes to give the Galaxy packaging its signature look, while being easy and convenient to recycle.

Upcycling that makes a statement

To prove that sustainability doesn’t mean sacrificing style points, in the past we partnered with design brands like Kvadrat and Sami Miró Vintage to create accessories that are as easy on the eyes as they are on the environment.

What’s your sustainable style?

We hope that environmental awareness becomes second nature to everyone. You can help build a sustainable future by reconsidering what you buy and how you dispose of products in your home.

If your style is to reuse and upcycle, consider a Samsung Certified Re-Newed smartphone. You’ll save money while keeping e-waste out of the landfill. If you love to have the latest and greatest products like Galaxy S21 5G2 and The Serif TV have been updated with minimal, easily recyclable packaging. Whatever your style, sustainability is a good look for you.
