When imagining her backyard space in Brooklyn, New York, activist and artist Malene Barnett chose The Terrace, an outdoor IP55 weather-resistant QLED television, as the perfect design element to make the space her own.
Known for creating ceramic artwork that evokes a sensorial experience, Malene’s pieces often mimic fabrics and cloth patterns. Her clay sculptures mirror textiles such as Kente cloth from Ghana and mud cloth from Mali. With a desire to bring the same inviting essence into her home through colors, textures, ambience and lighting, her dwelling reflects a unique aesthetic.
"Being in Brooklyn, where there is a lot going on, I wanted to make sure my home transported guests to another place.”
– Malene Barnett
With touches of exposed stained wood, pops of bright colors and blooms of lush greenery, Malene juxtaposed cutting-edge technology with cozy comforts. She drew inspiration from West African and Caribbean cultures, places known for their familial outdoor gatherings and lively festas, to turn her backyard into a tropical paradise. This made The Terrace a necessary design element – it is the centerpiece of a personal canvas to illuminate her vision of an outdoor oasis.
An innovative and immersive
backyard oasis
In New York City, any kind of private outdoor space is a precious commodity. That’s why Malene paid meticulous attention to detail while creating a serene and inviting environment of her own, nestling a piece of the islands within her urban jungle. The Terrace allowed her to tie it all together.
“I love to get my groove on, and I’ve dreamed of having old school reggae parties and dinner parties. I really can’t wait to entertain all the people that have supported me over the years – family and friends.”
– Malene Barnett
Malene believes that every space needs art. She often uses art to explore her own culture through intuition and empowered self-expression. That is one of the reasons she has never owned a television before. “I’m one of those people where if I can’t find what I want, I’d rather have nothing at all,” she muses. And that’s why Malene selected The Terrace: innovative features, weather-resistant qualities and the opportunity to create a unique, tailored experience.
“Having the Terrace TV outside is really going to enhance my parties, lounge time – all forms of entertaining I love.”
– Malene Barnett
With The Terrace, Malene can access her favorite apps and streaming services. Anti-glare technology, Ultra Viewing Angle and enhanced color – even in daylight – make every seat in her backyard the best seat. And for an artist whose artwork revolves around textures and details, the crystal clear 4K QLED picture is important: images feature defined edges and reduced noise.
Another of Malene’s favorite Terrace TV features when she’s lounging or entertaining is Multi-View. It allows her to video call with friends and watch her favorite movie, or keep tabs on the news and play her workout videos. She can also tap into the SmartThings app from The Terrace and control her lights, check the inside of her fridge and preheat her oven. Stylish, sleek and connected, The Terrace breathes new life into at-home entertainment and décor. No matter the occasion, how long the watch party or the movie night, it gives Malene the perfect vibe.
“In my work and my life, I always want to celebrate joy. And joy comes in many forms.”
– Malene Barnett
Serenity in a city can be hard to find, especially in large urban sprawls like New York. But for Malene, it’s right outside her back door. It’s a place where the functionality of The Terrace and the beauty of design truly complement each other. Celebrating joy comes naturally in her backyard oasis, where the idyllic buds of nature meet art and innovation.
