Connect or reset the Z Fold5 S Pen
Connect the Z Fold5 S Pen
To begin using the Z Fold5 S Pen, just start writing with it on your phone’s screen.
If your Z Fold5 doesn’t detect the S Pen after a few moments, you can navigate to and open Settings, then tap Advanced features, and then tap S Pen. Tap More options (the three vertical dots), and then tap Scan for S Pen or Scan for S Pen Pro.
Reset the Z Fold5 S Pen
You can easily reset your Z Fold5 S Pen.
Navigate to and open Settings, and then tap Advanced features. Tap S Pen, tap More options (the three vertical dots), and then tap Reset S Pen. Wait a few moments for the connection to reset.
Write and draw with the Z Fold S Pen
Write with the Z Fold5 S Pen
Using the Z Fold5 S Pen to write on the screen is effortless! You can follow the steps below to create notes in the Samsung Notes app.
- Navigate to and open the Samsung Notes app. Tap the Pencil icon to create a note.
- Tap the Handwriting mode icon (it looks like a squiggle) to begin writing a note using the S Pen. For different pen and color options, tap the Pen mode icon at the bottom of the screen.
- Use your fingers to pinch the screen if you need to zoom in and out.
- If your handwriting is a little wobbly, you can straighten it by tapping the Straighten icon (the three lines with an arrow) at the bottom. Your handwriting will automatically straighten horizontally.
- When you’re finished writing, tap the Convert to text icon (it looks like an uppercase T) at the bottom of the screen.
- Drag the arrows up or down to select your writing.
- Tap Convert to change your handwriting into text. You can also tap Copy to copy the text if you need to paste it elsewhere.
Draw with the Z Fold5 S Pen
You can use the S Pen’s drawing features to draw in Samsung Notes as well as get creative with the PENUP app.
- To start using the PENUP app, make sure you're logged into your Samsung account. Open PENUP, and then open a coloring page or blank page.
- You'll be prompted to select a canvas. Make your selection, and then tap Start drawing.
- Tap the brush tools at the top, then select your desired brush, and then adjust its settings. Here are the available brush tools from left to right:
- Watercolor: It makes clear, smoky brushstrokes; it’s great for coloring the sky or water.
- Oil paint: It’s a standard paintbrush for paintings or arts and crafts. Its strokes are thick and solid. Use this when you want to fill in large areas with a consistent, thick color.
- Calligraphy: Traditionally, these brushes were used for writing Chinese or Japanese letters, but now many modern artists use calligraphy brushes. They make thin, accurate strokes.
- Pencil: Use this to write or color like a real pencil. You can adjust the pencil’s thickness, but the strokes will always be very thin and grainy like an actual pencil.
- Airbrush: This tool will give you the foggy look of an airbrush or a spray can. It’s perfect for coloring clouds, sheep, or anything fluffy.
- Marker: It’s like using a Sharpie or a marker. Use it for bold, thick lines – it’s great for both coloring and writing.
- Crayon: This will give you the appearance and texture of a real crayon.
- Pen: Use the Pen to glide across your screen when writing or drawing.
- Pattern: Add a fun pattern to your artwork, such as bubbles, hearts, leaves, flowers, or sparkles.

Use Air command with the Z Fold5 S Pen
The Air command menu contains shortcuts to certain features on your device, such as creating new notes in Samsung Notes and translating languages with Bixby Vision. You can easily access these features with the Z Fold5 S Pen by hovering the S Pen over the screen to select from the Air command menu. If there are certain functions you use more than others, you can edit the Air command menu to suit your needs.
To see all of the Air command's features, pull your S Pen out of its slot and tap the floating Air command icon or press the Pen button on the side of the S Pen. You can access the following features in the Air command menu:
- Create note: Open Samsung Notes to jot down a quick note with the S Pen.
- View all notes: Open Samsung Notes to see every note you’ve written.
- Smart select: Allows you to collect content quickly. You can also make your own GIFs from content on the screen.
- Screen write: Write and draw on the current screen.
- Live messages: Draw your own emojis, make animated GIFs, or write handwritten messages on photos.
- AR Doodle: Draw or write AR text on your camera's viewfinder in real time!
- Translate: Hover the S Pen over a word to translate it.
Note: Currencies and units in a sentence can be converted in accordance with the system language that you’re currently using. - Bixby Vision: Identify landmarks, translate foreign languages, and shop for products online. The option will vary depending on the image.
- PENUP: Let your creativity run wild. Draw, color, and much more.
- Settings icon: Change the Air command settings.
- Add shortcuts: Add shortcuts for your frequently used apps to the Air command panel. Tap Add shortcuts, and then select the app shortcut you’d like to add. To remove shortcuts, simply tap the red Minus icon next to the shortcut.
You can also disable Air command if you don’t want to use it. With the Air command menu open, tap the Settings icon, and then swipe to the Air command section or tap Air command, depending on your device. Tap the switch next to Show air command icon.
