A Samsung dishwasher making noise

While we try to make our dishwashers as quiet as possible, they cannot operate in complete silence. Loud or unusual noises indicate that action is needed, however. Since dishwasher noises tend to be random and intermittent, we recommend to record the noise in case service is needed. However, this guide will cover the steps that may help you avoid service.

Some of the debris in the drain pump or filter may be sharp (glass, bone, plastics, etc). Please use caution to avoid injury. Do not use WD-40 on your dishwasher.

If you'd like to learn more about the appropriate decibel levels for your dishwasher, you can go to the dishwasher's product page on the Samsung website, and then check its specs to determine its specific Sound level (dBA).

Humming, buzzing, or grinding

A low humming or buzzing sound is normal for your dishwasher to make. However, loud humming, buzzing, or grinding noises imply that something is caught in the drain pump's impeller below the filter.

  1. Inspect the drain filter and pump (applicable models only).
    • If your model allows for it, inspect and clean out the filter and drain pump opening under the filter.
    • If your filter and drain pump opening are not accessible, but the grinding or buzzing is loud and happens every cycle, please visit the Support Center to request service.
  2. Check the water supply.
    • Make sure it is connected to the dishwasher.
    • Make sure the home's water supply is turned on.
    • Verify it meets all requirements listed in the guide for water supply requirements.
  3. Make sure the dishwasher cabinet insulation (the fabric on the outside of the dishwasher) is in good condition. It is there to dampen sound and hold in heat.

Tapping, knocking, crackling, or banging

Sounds that can be described as tapping, knocking, crackling, or banging, happen when dishes are not loaded properly and are hitting the spray nozzles, or when there is a loose filter or other item inside the dishwasher getting knocked around by the spray nozzles.

  • Ensure the dishwasher is loaded properly. A utensil could be hanging out of the rack, knocking into the spray nozzles or deflector. If dishes are not secure, they may move around on the racks and cause noise.
  • Some models have a removable filter system that, if not secured, will bounce around inside of the dishwasher, making tapping sounds. To see instructions for removing, cleaning, and reinserting the filter, please refer to your specific model's user manual. If your model doesn't mention the filter, then it is not removable on that model.

If the dishwasher is clean, but the noise still happens when running an empty cycle, visit our Support Center to request service.

Squeaking from door hinges

Inspect the door to determine what part of it is making the squeaking sound. If it is coming from the hinge, try lubricating it with a food safe lubricant (not WD-40).

If the lubricant does not help or the noise is not coming from the hinge, visit our Support Center to request service.

Clicking or popping when opening door

If the door does not open smoothly or fully, or if there's clicking or popping noises when opening the door, check the kickplate. If it wiggles or moves, it can come in contact with the door. Move the kick plate down towards the floor and tighten the screws. If necessary, remove it and reinstall it correctly.

Water sounds

You may hear a watery noise when the dishwasher is spraying water onto your dishes while it's cleaning a load.

If you have a WaterWall model, this sound may be coming from the WaterWall vane moving back and forth.

/

Whistling or whining

Water running through pipes can often make a high pitched sound such as whistling or whining.

If this noise is happening during the dry cycle when water is not running, and isn't coming from other pipes in the home instead of the dishwasher, first clean the dishwasher and make sure there is no plastic or debris at the bottom of the dishwasher. If the noise continues during the dry cycle, visit our Support Center to request service.
