Samsung TV or projector has low audio when watching movies

A common complaint when watching movies is that the sound is too low or the dialog is too hard to hear. This is because movies are recorded at a lower volume than normal TV. These tips can help make it easier to hear everything that is going on on your TV, projector, or Odyssey Ark gaming screen.

Most movies are recorded at a lower decibel range than live TV and the audio is optimized for 5.1 playback. Because of this audio issues can be experienced when playing movies on a 2 channel stereo source, like the speakers that are built into your TV or projector.

  1. Set the sound mode to Amplify.

    This preset mode will amplify the audio for voices and will resolve most issues.

    Raise the volume to a higher level than normal TV viewing. This will not damage the TV/projector and does not mean there is an audio issue with it. Remember to lower the audio after watching the movie.

  2. Add a soundbar or home theater system.

    Movies are typically recorded for 5.1 channel surround systems with 5 speakers and a subwoofer. Your TV's internal speakers are only two-channel stereo speakers, also known as a PCM signal. In short, the movie's audio simply wasn't designed to be played on TV speakers, and some audio quality (and volume) is lost in the conversion.

    Soundbars and Home theater systems are designed to receive a 5.1 audio source and will deliver a better audio experience.

  3. Continue troubleshooting low audio.
