Dispenser drawer issues in Samsung washing machine

Your Samsung washing machine's dispenser is located in the detergent drawer and dispenses detergent, bleach, or fabric softener at the proper time during the cycle so your clothing and other items come out clean. If the cycle ends with a drawer full of water or the other things you've added, like detergent or softener, or if your additives drain out of it immediately, there are a few things you can do to solve the issue.

Dispenser drawer issues in Samsung washing machine

Important
Always use HE detergent. If your detergent drawer is leaking, see our troubleshooting guide for leaks. If the auto dispenser is displaying a refill message, see our refill message guide.
1

Do not exceed the MAX line, and use the liquid inserts when using liquid.

Each compartment in the dispenser drawer has a MAX line. If you are using liquid detergent, the liquid detergent insert should be inserted and pushed all the way down. (Some models also have an insert for liquid chlorine bleach.) This insert also includes a MAX line. If you exceed the MAX line in any compartment, or if you add a liquid without the insert, the additive will drain into the tub immediately. This will cause stained clothes, residue buildup, dispensing issues, and odors.

Some models don't use a detergent drawer for some additives, such as bleach. In this case, the additive will drain out of sight immediately. The liquid goes to the cavity between the outer drum and spin basket, but some may actually be seen entering the tub.

If the amount of additive you need to use exceeds the MAX line, then use either a different and more concentrated form of the additive, or reduce the size of your load. If the detergent or softener is too thick to dispense properly, dilute it with water. However, do not exceed the MAX line when diluting it. You can also try using different detergents.

If you've lost the liquid inserts, you can purchase more from Samsung Parts.

If you're using an auto dispenser, turn it on.

Some models include an auto dispenser (with compartments for Auto Detergent and Auto Softener), which you have to unlock to open and fill. (These compartments only work with liquid detergent.)

Navigate to the options menu and turn on Dose per Wash (for detergent) and Dose per Rinse (for softener) to activate these compartments and set the desired dosage size.

For more information on turning this setting on, or if you'd rather turn it off and dispense detergent manually instead, see our auto dispenser guide.

Important
Auto dispenser compartments default to Off when the washer is first shipped or if the washer experiences a power outage lasting over 5 minutes. The setting(s) must be turned on before detergent or softener will dispense from them.
3

Level the washing machine.

If the washer is not level, it will cause an incorrect slant in the detergent drawer, affecting how the siphons work. You'll need to level the washer during installation and later on if it becomes unbalanced.
4

Clean the detergent drawer.

The detergent drawer should be cleaned periodically to prevent residue from building up and preventing issues with dispensing detergent, fabric softener, or bleach.

On a front load washer, you can remove the washer detergent drawer by pushing in on the ends of each side of the drawer at the same time and then pulling it out. On a top load washer, pull the drawer out, and then tip it up to remove it.

If this residue builds up frequently, consider diluting the additives you're putting in, as long as this doesn't exceed the MAX line (see Step 1).

Note
Softener that is expired or exposed to extreme temperatures may be too thick and lumpy to dispense correctly. If your softener is lumpy and does not dispense, dilute it with warm water until it reaches a normal consistency.
5

Run a rinse and spin cycle without adding detergent.

Running empty cycles without adding detergent or other additives helps flush water through the detergent drawer and siphons, thereby clearing them out.

If you see soap bubbles in the wash even though you didn't add anything to the drawer, this is residue that's being cleaned out of the system. Keep running more cycles until you don't see soap bubbles anymore.

Not only does this keep things clean, but it improves the washer's performance and helps prevent odors.

To prevent this residue from occurring in the future, do not exceed the manufacturer's recommended amount of detergent for your load size.

6

Replace the detergent drawer.

If you continue to have issues with additives not draining correctly or draining immediately, there may be some defect in the detergent drawer. For a warranty replacement, contact us. For out of warranty purchases, visit Samsung Parts.
7

Request service.

If the issue continues even with a new detergent drawer and after following the above steps, visit our Support Center to request service.
